As divorce has become more common, so have blended families. Siblings have a hard enough time getting along as it is and they spend their whole lives together. Step siblings have to get used to one another all of a sudden.
And imagine if you’ve been peacefully living with your parent for 40 years and all of a sudden Will Ferrell moves into your house and starts being mean to you. Well, that’s sort of what happens in Step Brothers, a new comedy about a pair of middle-aged step siblings who act like children and suddenly find themselves forced to grow up together.

Beren: So I have this theory about Will Ferrell that ever since Zoolander he’s been playing the same character over and over, and I stopped going to his movies. He’s a funny guy, but I feel like he was so funny on Saturday Night Live and so much more random, like, I just haven’t been to any of his movies. But I’m really interested in seeing the movie Step Brothers because it has John C. Reilly, who is actually a really funny guy too.
Jason: Yeah. And it looks like it might be different characters too because they’re sort of masquerading as kids instead of the typical Anchorman character. What’s interesting is I heard an interview with Will Ferrell and the same character thing is totally his fault. Apparently all of his movies are really scripted, which I wouldn’t have guessed. I would have guessed it’s just like, they get a summary of what’s going to happen in this scene and then they just go for it, improv it. But he says they put the scripts through like seven drafts and does it line by line.
Beren: Whoa, that’s crazy. I wonder if his alter ego is just this cocky, brainless dude.
Jason: Maybe.
Jason: Exactly. But here Will Ferrell does three goofy sports movies in a row.
Beren: Yeah. That’s cool that John C. Reilly is doing comedy. I mean he’s always been funny because he looks off-kilter and funny, but he’s like a really funny dude. That’s good. They’re like a good team.

Discussion
Beren has stopped watching Will Ferrell movies because she thinks they’re all kind of the same (Devan and Marni agree, although it doesn’t seem to bother them). But she hopes that Step Brothers will be different because of John C. Reilly, who was also in Talladega Nights with Ferrell.
Jason tells her that he heard an interview with Ferrell talking about how he works hard on the scripts for his movies and it sounds like he basically chooses to make them all the same. It’s strange because most actors strive for variety.
Do you think Ferrell’s movies are too similar or do you like them?
